So, here were my problems:

I have really sensitive skin, and every time I grabbed a Lysol wipe for a quick countertop wipe down or to clean the bathroom counters, my hands got so dry. And itchy. And they hurt. And they were dry. My skin hates chemicals. I've always been sensitive, but I like things to actually be clean, too.

I've tried all the natural cleaners. They still irritate me. Enter no cleaners.

So my friend Sarah introduced me to Norwex and these awesome microfiber cloths. You can use them with water-only for all kinds of cleaning. That top pink one - it's for windows. It works really well on Gemma's slobber all over the front windows. (She's our dog, if you were wondering). And she likes to sit at the front of our house hunting squirrels through the window. It makes my windows disgusting, and today she broke my favorite Ikea lamp when a cat crossed into our yard. Such is life with a dog.

I use the gray cloths in the kitchen. But what really has me excited is that light green cloth that says "body" on it. I have a closeup to show you the difference between the two body cloths. The green one on the left is a make-up remover cloth and I'm completely obsessed. The other is more like a regular washcloth, except really soft.

Back to the makeup remover cloth though. All you have to do is make it damp and it wipes away every trace of makeup. No buying tons of makeup removing wipes, no chemical removers (that wreak havoc on my skin like everything else). Also, it's super easy to travel with. I threw it in my cosmetic bag for our Disney trip and it saved me from having to pack liquid makeup remover and cotton balls. I love simplifying.

It works really, really well. I use it to remove waterproof eyeliner every day and it comes off really easily. I use the Urban Decay Ink for Eyes waterproof eyeliner, and if you've ever tried it, you know that stuff does. not. budge.

If you're not into using harsh chemicals, and if you happen to have sensitive skin like me, Norwex is definitely worth trying. Two birds, one stone, if we want to get cliche about it. If you're interested, head to my friend Sarah's website or visit her Facebook page and ask for help. She knows cleaning and she knows natural living, too, which makes me wish I could put all the heart emojis right here. (use your imagination)
Note: I was provided a bag of coffee from Atlas Coffee Club in exchange for my honest review. As always, these are my own opinions. If I didn't like something, I wouldn't take time out of my day to write about it. I'm not into wasting my time or yours.

You know when you wake up and you just know it's going to be a good day? You can feel it deep down in every fiber? That's how I feel when I know I have delicious coffee ready to brew. Likewise, a cup of bad coffee can ruin a day like nothing else. All the worst days start with bad coffee, or what I call water-coffee. Like cheap hotel coffee brewed with chlorine laden water. Yuck.

Now where was I going with that?

Right! To remind you of all the reasons you need to step up your coffee game. Good coffee = good days. Life is too short to drink bad coffee. I have mentioned maybe half a dozen times here that I really want to live in a tiny house on the side of a mountain. I really don't need to own anything except a French press and a stockpile of dark roast coffee. It's the little things that really matter.

So why Atlas Coffee Club?

1. It comes to your door. No forgetting to grab (bad) coffee at the grocery store.

2. No taking extra time (and money) out of your day to stop for coffee on the way to work.

3. It's delicious. Like, really good.

4. It's not one of those hit or miss subscriptions. The Atlas subscription provides coffee that is its own brand. You know what you're getting. Not that I'm naming any names, but it's unlike those beauty box subscriptions that give you Chanel quality one month, and CVS the next, all for the same lovely price. With Atlas, you know you're getting great coffee every time.

5. Variety. With 12 different varieties (three of which are subscription exclusive), you have plenty of options without having the same thing every single morning.

Although, I have to say I could definitely go with the Midnight Blend every morning. Don't be fooled--this isn't decaf. It's a dark roast with dark chocolate and caramel notes, which can be confirmed if you grab a magnifying glass and look at the yellow part of the label below. (Or you can be totally non-hipster about it and just zoom in with your computer.)

Tom has recently gotten into brewing his own beer and we're going to use this blend for a coffee stout. I see delicious things in our future. Have you tried it? Get it here. Or follow them on Instagram, it's a particularly good account.
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif; font-size: xx-small; line-height: 14px; text-align: center;">This post is part of a year-long partnership with the Netflix #StreamTeam

<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif; font-size: xx-small; line-height: 14px; text-align: center;">

So what's a family night-in look like in your house? At our house it usually involves some couch-cuddling, fleece blankets, popcorn with Kerrygold butter + salt, and something all three of us can watch. Usually we all pile on one couch (plus Gemma on someone's lap) even though we have two in our living room.

Delicious beverages are included, obviously. Meaning, a good local craft beer for Tom and I (usually something from either Tree House, Iron Duke, Trillium, or Night Shift), and some hot chocolate or Naked Green Machine juice for Carter. It's his fave.

Carter's Favorite Chocolate Milk Recipe:

1-2 T Native Forest Coconut Milk (the full fat kind)

1/2 C unsweetened vanilla almond milk

2 T Ghirardelli unsweetened cocoa powder

Maple Syrup

Heat it on the stove or in the microwave, then throw it in the blender. Delicious.

So here's what's on our list for some future nights in at our house:

1. Fuller House

Why: If you have any respect for the 90s, you'll watch it as a moral obligation. Quite honestly, I have not had the time yet since starting a new job at the end of January (!), but it's on my mental "to-watch" list. I don't have high hopes for it (did I say that?) but it's just one of those things where you have to give it a chance, if only for your six-year-old self.

How Rude. You got it dude. Cut it out. (Had to get all that out at once.)

2. Grace and Frankie

Why: So unique. Season 2 is released Friday, April 15, so you'll want to be all caught up in time for that. It's definitely not a show where you feel like, haven't I watch this 15 times before?

The characters are all the age of your grandparents, which is a nice change from the main character 20-somethings in every show ever.

3. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Why: It's hilarious. Do you need another reason?

* * * * *

And now a not-so-subtle segue into life happenings.

I got a new job as an inbound marketing consultant. It's been a great transition and I'm very excited about it. I'm still working from home, which is and always has been a priority for me. It just suits my personality. You're either someone who can work remotely and ignore your dishes and laundry all day, or you aren't (and if that's the case, I don't really understand you as a person.)

Carter is going to be 5 in a couple months, which I can't even comprehend. He's hilarious and he still has a fantastic sense of style. Or maybe I'm just good at pushing it onto him? Either way, he has strong opinions about what he wears. It took us a good two months of wearing too-small sneakers for him to decide on a pair. They had to be all green. We spent a good five times scrolling through Zappos, but none were up to par. There was always a stray black sole or white Nike swoosh to be found. Enter the lime green (called safety yellow--but we'll go with it) sneakers from Gap. Finally his toes have a little wiggle room.

We're going to Disney at the beginning of May and I can't wait for it. Fort Wilderness cabins, here we come! The magic bands have been chosen, the stroller is rented, everything is good to go. The planning has been much less stressful this year than last (which was our first time doing Disney). It really takes a while to get a feel for how everything works. I had a near panic attack last year while planning fast passes (don't judge), but now I can't wait for it. In particular, we're looking forward to Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Splash Mountain, and Tower of Terror.

Carter's cousins are going too and I see a super-fun time for all of us with zero sleep and too much salty Disney popcorn. Bring it on!

Let's have a little Q&A today, shall we?

Me: Do you like jewelry?
You: Yes, duh.

Me: Do you get sick of wearing the same jewelry after a week or two?
You: Yes, duh.

Solution: RocksBox

Sign up to get 1 month of free jewelry to wear, and send it back (also free) when you're sick of it.
Use code: positivelyamyxoxo

I'm loving mine. On an unrelated note, I also love my Los Gatos Patagonia vest (also pictured). I don't take it off. Ever. Ask Tom.

Enjoy the rest of your day. Think happy thoughts. Work hard. Say hi to me on Twitter.
Or don't do any of these things. It's up to you.
Who here listens to podcasts? I just love them. I'm definitely part auditory learner and part visual, so I love using time in the car, times when I'm doing simple tasks on the computer, or those minutes (hours) when I can't fall asleep at night to learn something new or to just simply clear my mind from my daily to-do lists.

(any of these can be found on iTunes, Stitcher, the podcast app on your iPhone/iPad, but I'll link to the sites for them)

1. My first favorite is definitely Serial. I'm sure lots of you have listened to this already. I just think the producers of Serial are SUCH great story tellers. I couldn't tear myself away from the first season, and started listening to episode after episode of the podcast "Undisclosed" just for more in-depth info on the case. I won't say anything in case you're new to it, but I want to! Now, on the second season, I am immediately sucked into a story I didn't think I'd be that into. I read a bit about Bowe Bergdahl on the news, but never was overly drawn in. I think because based on anything I read in the news, I couldn't really tell if only one side was being reported, etc, so I kind of just blocked it out because, what do I know about POWs and deserters? Nothing. That's what I love about Serial though. The way they explain foreign topics so seamlessly and make it insanely interesting at the same time. Like the way they interview people from all sides, involved in every which way. It's so cool.

2. This is kind of a random one (for me), but I really like The Art of Charm. It's definitely geared toward men, but I find a lot of the business focused podcasts to be full of useful information, and they get to the point quickly. They also interview some really interesting people and I love when I've listened to or watched a TED talk and then they interview the same person. Like Scott Dinsmore. I watched his Ted Talk on finding your passions and then, wouldn't you know, he showed up on The Art of Charm. Worlds colliding! Love it.

3. Primal Potential. I like Elizabeth's "no nonsense" attitude and her straight talk about healthy eating. I also love her focus on creating healthy habits and completely abandoning anything resembling a diet. It's been a go-to for me for a while (<strike>even</strike> especially on days when I eat Ben & Jerry's and don't feel bad about it).

4. "Stuff You Missed in History Class"--so I missed a lot in history class. The only reason I got good grades in history throughout high school were because I could whip out a 12 pager on Teddy Roosevelt like nobody's business. Did I pay attention in class? Nope. Did I think history was relevant? No way. Did I secretly paint my nails under my desk? You betcha. Luckily test grades were not all that mattered. Thank God for papers and homework assignments. Who ever thought I'd say that?

Anyway, in college I took a history class my freshman year and this was the turning point regarding my feelings toward history. I had the greatest professor who looked like he had just jumped out of a safari five minutes ago and he could tell a story about Alexander Great like it was the next blockbuster. See, my thing is storytelling. If you can't turn history into a good story, how am I supposed to find value in it? Names and dates are meaningless to me without a good tale to back it up. So in this class, I learned all the things (since in all years prior to my 19th year of life I had ignored all that was thrust upon me). So now I'm playing catch up and I just can't get enough of Holly and Tracy. They're my favorite. They're just so into it, all the time. And somehow they make shows about ax murders a little...giggle worthy? Is that okay? If you have ever uttered the phrase "history is in the past," this one's for you.

5. The Moth. This is another story-telling one, go figure. This one was a recommendation from my sister-in-law and I love it. It's like slam poetry, but it's slam stories. People memorize five minute stories and perform them at a story slam. These stories are all true and from their own experiences. It makes me nervous just to think about it. I really want to go to one! Not putting my name in the hat though. Sorry.

So we all watch Netflix here, right? Well today someone's going to win 6 months of free Netflix just in time for Christmas movie watching and the new season of "Unbreakable Kimmie Schmidt." Lucky you. Well the winner will technically be announced on Tuesday 12/15, but who's counting down? If you want to skip my genius of a post--go right ahead and scroll down to the bottom. It's not going to hurt my feelings at all.

First things first.

I want to provide you with 4 Non-Clutter Gift Ideas. Because after Christmas things just get messy. Like messy. And nothing has a place and it's just chaos everywhere.

1. Warm, fuzzy blankets. You can't have too many of these. And they belong draped over a comfy chair or your sofa. No putting away necessary. Also, if you've got a lot of 'em...the linen closet? Easy.

2. Slippers. Probably the last time you got slippers was last Christmas. And if you wore them outside to take out the trash and maybe even to shovel a step or two (even though you swore you wouldn't), they're probably looking pretty sad right now and you could use a revamp.

*Note, #1 and #2 would go fantastic with 6 months of Netflix. You'd have to make some hot chocolate too. Not cocoa. That word's gross.

3. Restaurant gift cards. Because who doesn't want to go out to eat on someone else's treat? I'll take a sushi one, please.

4. Something super cool...like tickets for zip line canopy tours. My sister, my mom, and I would have so much fun with this. And this is as scary as I get without sky diving. They did it, sky diving I mean. I couldn't. Like I couldn't and I also wouldn't. When they went I was pregnant with Carter so I didn't even have to come up with an excuse.
To counteract all the holiday gift guides I'm already seeing (even pre-Thanksgiving) here's a list of non-toy/pointless material object gift ideas for kids. I'm not saying all toys are bad--we have fun with so many of them and we have a playroom-ful, so no judgment here. But I want to make an effort to be less concerned with the material things and more focused on enjoying each other's company this holiday season. Maybe I'm hopping on the REI bandwagon, but that's fine by me.

A few notes on my ideas (these aren't sponsored):

-One monthly box subscription that I think would be great for kids is We Cook, but there is also Citrus Lane, Kiwi Crate, etc.

-Carter's taking a theater class, which is different, and he loves it! So there's an idea.

-Kid salons are so fun. I take Carter to one and every time he gets his hair cut, they spike the front with gel and make it green. So this works for boys too! The one near us also does manis/pedis in big pink chairs. So cute.

-Shows are the greatest. Disney on Ice is awesome. There's also The Wiggles, Peppa Pig has a stage show, Veggie Tales Live is fantastic; you could look into kids' concerts, etc. So many possibilities. I could throw out a cliche like "the sky is the limit," "the possibilities are endless," but you get the idea, I think. Right?

So anyway, what are YOUR non-toy ideas? What has gone over well in the past? Tweet your non-toy ideas to me @Positively_Amy with #NoMoreToys

Positively Amyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05561342134449272620noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2665277460648981027.post-34320875192784068002015-11-16T14:13:00.000-05:002015-11-16T14:13:22.964-05:00I almost hit a tree and PINCHme reviewSo we all know how I love to get mail, right? Not junk mail. I hate that. It makes me want to go on strike like Kramer and just never collect my mail again. But packages are totally different.

So Carter was safely buckled into his car seat, I had my seat belt on, I put the car into reverse and (thankfully) *inched* backward down our driveway while backing into our turnaround. You know the whole diagonal reverse thing? When suddenly, a package...a package(!) caught my eye as it rested on the stone wall.

Unbeknownst to me, as I was busy rejoicing at the package lying in wait, my foot had not positioned itself correctly on the brake pedal and we were still inching backward into our turnaround, when I heard squeaking on the side of the car. Panicked, I slammed on the brakes and shot my eyes into the back window where I was greeted by a tree, not but two inches away, seemingly ESPing to me, well that was close!!

So we didn't hit the tree. The squeaky branches alerted me and saved us (well I don't know "saved us" is the correct phrase. We were probably driving at exactly 1 mile per hour, so backing into the tree wouldn't exactly have been catastrophic). But, darn you packages, for being so exciting.

So what was this package, you ask? Well it was a PINCHme box of course, filled with delightful samples of every kind. This box was a success because there was a good mix of things I like (nail polish and popcorn, particularly) and things for Carter (Elmo sensitive shampoo, the popcorn--we'll fight over that later).

So the fun-ness of PINCHme is that it's a free sample box that comes to your door for your mail receiving pleasure. And what do they want in return? After you receive your box, you fill out a short survey with your thoughts on the products. So if you like getting packages and you have thoughts in your brain, PINCHme is for you.

If you do not like getting packages and/or you do not have opinions about anything, skip it.

And here was Carter being super strong and lifting the box. We opened it in the pre-school drop-off line because what else is there to do at drop-off?

This isn't sponsored. This is what we do in our family and it works for us. Consult your doctor, do what works for you.

I'm sharing it because I like posts like this and I generally like to know what other people prefer before I buy something. Sometimes I don't care. But if a fish oil tastes horrible, I want to know that going in.

Now that we have that out of the way, let's get to the good stuff. The following is what we take daily. The vitamin D we cut down on and sometimes take a break from over the summer. The prices I found are current as of today on VitaCost (not sponsored, no affiliate links here!). That is where I purchase these items and I think they have the best prices (other than Amazon, but sometimes I wonder about the safety of buying supplements from Amazon). Hm. Anyway...

1. Carlson's Arctic Cod Liver oil (liquid, not capsules) in strawberry flavor.

Why we take it: Do I need to go into a big tangent on Omega 3s or do you get it? My favorite explanation of the importance of cod liver oil is in this book. I also like the discussion of bone broth in there and it's the reason I make chicken broth almost weekly in the fall/winter! (Also because it's easy and not time consuming like you'd think, and that works for me).

I like to use the liquid because I can just half the dose for Carter (it's the exact same nutrition facts for the kids' version, just doubled). Plus it's more economical than the capsules.
.

How we take it: In a little splash of green juice! Usually Naked or Odwalla brand just because they're fruit-heavy and totally cover the taste and texture of the oil. I've taken the oil straight and honestly the taste is great, not at all fishy and super strawberry-ish, I just don't like the texture of oil.

2. Garden of Life probiotics for kids.
Why: Carter takes one tablet a day. I chose these because they have a 5 billion dosage and a lot of kids' probiotics only have 3 billion. I say bring on the billions. I give it to him for immunity, and also because he has a sensitive stomach and it seems to help him.

How: Chewable! He takes it either with breakfast or dinner. Whenever we remember.

3. Adult probiotics. Pretty self-explanatory! I usually only take 1 capsule a day, but I up it if I feel like I'm coming down with something.

4. Vitamin D3 for kids.
Why: Why not?! Even if you take a little too much vitamin D, it's not a bad thing. Also, you can say "go out in the sun" all you want, but in New England that's not going to be enough from basically October through April. And even in the summer, Carter would burn before he ever got his 45 minutes in so a supplement it is. I don't take sun burn chances with his super fair skin and melanoma in our family. Eek.

How: I usually add this to the same green juice as his fish oil. The probiotic he takes has d3 too so I don't go crazy with this one and it lasts a long time.

5. Adult vitamin D3
I feel so much better when I take vitamin D. Happier, more energy. I mean it's no cup of coffee, but the way I feel during the winter when I take it regularly compared to how I've felt in the past with no vitamin D to speak of, is a huge difference. Also, I feel like superwoman when I go get my blood drawn at my doctor's office and they're all, "You'll probably be low in vitamin D, everyone is," and then I get the phone call, "Your vitamin D levels are perfect." Yeah. OBVS. Am I the only one who feels accomplished when I hear this? Ha!

It might seem pricey when you add it all up, but both of our bottles of vitamin D last over a year because we forget some days (doesn't everyone?) and we go easy on it in the summer. The fish oil lasts about 3 months with three of us taking it (Carter regularly and Tom and I sporadically). Same with the adult probiotics. The only thing we replace often (monthly) is Carter's probiotic.

Positively Amyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05561342134449272620noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2665277460648981027.post-3895589965380334942015-10-12T15:30:00.005-04:002015-10-12T15:30:48.783-04:00September

So I signed Carter up for a theater acting class. He hated the first one. Or so he says. I think he just didn't like the fact that it's a drop off class and parents don't stay (although I hung out on the front steps and in the car in the parking lot because that's just the kind of mom I am). I actually went about 1/4 mile down the road to get gas at one point and felt extremely guilty about it.

I've been getting a kick out of funny shirts and sweatshirts recently. I just like clothes that put me in a good mood.

I really want this sweatshirt from ModCloth

and I've seen this t-shirt in kids' sizes and it kills me.

I had a bad parenting moment recently. Veggie Tales in the House Season 2 was released on Netflix and Carter may or may not have watched 11 episodes in one day. I mean, I'm hoping he was sick that day, I can't remember. That's about 4 hours and 20 minutes of TV in one day. So I'm not advocating for that type of T.V. watching, but I'm totally advocating for the show. He loved it and it kept his attention (clearly). We're VeggieTales lovers anyway though. You can stop judging me now.

I started watching Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries and Phryne is the greatest character. If you have any affinity whatsoever for strong female characters who also wear fantastic outfits, live in a fancy house, and are smart as a whip, you'll love her. She's so unique and intriguing.

Also, if you haven't realized that Call the Midwife Season 4 is out, you best get on that.

So in this random, hodgepodge of a post we've discussed theater class, funny clothes, and Netflix shows.

So lastly I'm going to tell you about one of the greatest people to follow on instagram.

My absolute first person to go to when I need to see some uplifting posts is Keep Going Kat. She's a fitness and healthy eating inspiration as well, but she's just all around one of the most positive people out there. I've done her #KGKFitSisters group in the past and it's awesome. P.S. The link to her instagram is not sponsored. I just think your life will be better with her in it.

I shall leave you with this blury, non high quality photo that sums Carter up perfectly:
I'm not a sappy, tear-streaked mess about it being time for school, but I'm also not in the get them out of here! camp either. I'm somewhere meandering in between. I'm ready to be back in a routine again (and if the number of time-outs is directly proportional to how badly one needs a routine), Carter is too.

But don't you always feel like you didn't quite squeeze enough fun into the summer? Maybe it's because we started our summer off on a huge high note (Disney), but now that it's the end, I don't feel like we did all that much. There were playground trips and lots and lots of swimming days; we got to see a lot of family, but we didn't go to the beach even once. ONCE! Nope!

We have a camping trip coming up in a few weeks, so in my mind it's summer vacation until the end of September. Carter's never gone camping. And I think in the decade that Tom and I have been together we've gone precisely once, for two nights. And it involved way too much hiking. I'm looking forward to it because we'll be with family. And I love camping only for the reason that Tom hates it as much as I do and so in its inherent badness it will be good. We'll be on the same page (and Carter, being the exact combination of the two of us, will be, too. I'm too hot, where's the air conditioner? I need to go to the bathroom! I don't want to walk there! I need a fan. You packed the wrong toothpaste. My air mattress is too squishy. The ground is too hard! The bugs are biting me! I'm itchy! I need Claritin!)

So, to document our summer. We found a turtle,

relaxed on the hammock (this was early summer, hence the blanket),

ate A LOT of raspberries,

got to see Carter's shy face plenty of times,

and actually put all the makeup on one day. Hey, typical highlighting/contour photo.

For 99.9% of the summer I either wore no make-up at all, or I wore Jane Iredale tinted moisturizer, IT cosmetics concealer, bronzer and the greatest mascara of all time.

Also, if your kids are in need of a new show, this is a cute one:

Carter's been into it lately.

I personally have finally just finished season 6 of Parks & Rec, so that's where my free time has gone. I want to get this for my sister:

+ Lots of swimming. Carter's been using a bubble instead of his puddle jumper and he only needs two bubbles now. He can swim a little bit on his own without any bubble at all, but I need to be right next to him. It's exciting to see his progress though. He changes so much just throughout the week!

+Reflected on our Disney Trip. haha I never wrote about it in June, but that's when we went! It was so much fun. Carter is a ride lover. His favorite rides were:

1. Splash Mountain (I think we went on it 5 times, literally)

2. Thunder Mountain (only took him on it once because I thought he was going to fly out)
3. Seven Dwarfs Mine Train (we were lucky enough to sit in the front row!)

4. Tower of Terror (I know, you think I'm a bad parent. He doesn't mind the dark and he thought the whole beginning part was funny. You know, the old T.V. the "scary" voice, the building. He giggled through the whole thing. The success of this ride is totally personality-dependent though.)

I have pictures of the other rides somewhere, but they're in the abyss of the hundreds of photos of our trip, so this will have to do. Below is my poorly timed shot of Buzz Lightyear trying to give Tom a jump high five.

We saw a green army man lurking in the shadows and got a hug and an autograph without waiting in line. It made Carter's morning at Hollywood Studios.

This face that Carter makes melts me. It's his excited/shy/embarrassed face and we got a lot of these poses--especially with princesses! So bashful, that one.

When we got home, lazy days were on the schedule. Disney is tons of fun, but it takes a lot out of you. All that walking, sun, and excitement.

So we got ourselves some new Netflix favorites.

Carter and Tom have turned early Saturday morning into a ritual of Dragons: Race to the Edge. Carter got a box with Hiccup and Toothless masks, a blow up sword, fleece blanket and all other sorts of cool dragon stuff so he was sucked in immediately.

Tom has always been a fan of How to Train Your Dragon so he's all over the new Saturday routine.

My new show has been Parks & Rec. I know I'm late to this one, but it's fantastic. I'd recommend starting on the second or third season because the first season is a little slow. It was tough to get into at first, but when Tom told me to skip ahead I couldn't stop watching. I put it on my iPad and balance it precariously on the coffee maker (don't do that) when I do the dishes. To me, dishes are one of the most painful chores so I need a distraction. Folding laundry is another Netflix-necessary chore.

It's one of those shows that leaves you in a better mood after you've watched it. Especially if your kitchen is clean when the episode ends. Clean kitchen always equals happy mood, at least for me.

One with his preschool friends and another with family. Both were so much fun! We got a moon bounce and I think several of the adults had as much fun on it as Carter and friends did.

Carter had his last day of preschool (except he has another year next year). It's so bittersweet to see how much kids grow up in a school year.

Look at that baby face in the left photo. Come back!!!! : (

In other news, Tom and I finally got to play Cards Against Humanity. We've had it since Christmas, but it's one of those things that if it's just two of you, you read the cards and chuckle quietly and say, "This would really funny with a group." It's just not the same with two people. You need at least 4, more is probably even better (but probably you should be pretty good friends, otherwise it might just be awkward).

So I always give you a little update of what we've been watching on Netflix. Best thing I've watched this month is Granite Flats. It's so different than every other show and it's definitely family-friendly. I love watching it on my iPad in the kitchen while I do the dishes, and I don't have to worry about whether Carter's playing nearby. Not one you have to pause or turn down the volume when kids walk into the room. Older kids would probably enjoy the storyline too! My dad and sister got me hooked on it. I think my dad wishes this was his childhood (and judging by his personality, it was probably somewhat close).

I also watched Cake last night, and while it will certainly leave you feeling a little more depressed than when you started it, it's worth the watch.

I found out David Sedaris is going to be within reasonable driving distance for a reading in the fall. I'm giddy. I hope my mom comes with me. On more than one occasion we have relived reading about his performance art days and we can't even handle ourselves. My mom went to art school so she's all too familiar. I wish he liked taking pictures because I'd be all over posting it here. Maybe I can snap a photo near his "No pictures, please" signage? Have you read Let's Explore Diabetes With Owls? I wake Tom up way too often at night because I can't contain my laughter. Reading funny material at night ensures waking up in a good mood. That's my philosophy, anyway. The first book I ever read of his (Me Talk Pretty One Day) gave me ab spasms from laughing so hard.

And lastly, we leave for Disney World TOMORROW! I can't contain my excitement. Carter says he's excited, but I don't think he fully understands the magic of WDW. He'll figure it out soon enough! He says he's most excited about roller coasters, and after that he's excited to meet the characters. This boy does love his fast rides. Last summer he went on his first roller coaster and instantly threw his hands up in the air and screamed. He learns fast. We're going to be two peas in a pod on rides and I can't wait. We'll see how Tom's legs fit on the rides. His knees are probably going to be somewhere in the vicinity of his ears.

Enough rambling. I need to finish packing.

And a soccer photo and a flea market find to end your read.
So I don't know about any of you, but I struggle with coming up with ideas for Father's Day. So the genius of DadGifts.com is exactly what I needed. Lots of cool, unique ideas all in one place. How many polos and random tools does a dad really need? Branch out!

I was all over this mini keg growler for Tom because he's recently gotten into a micro brewery near us where you wait in line for hours just to get a few (large) bottles. So I thought an accessory for that new habit couldn't hurt. Also, it's going to be perfect for all the fires in our back yard that we'll have this summer!

For the following reasons, I feel like SUCH a real adult now. Not just a 20-something adult, but like maybe verging on 40, even though I'm not actually quite there yet.
1. Our favorite activity is reading by the fire.
2. Our grass is not growing well this year and I'm genuinely upset about it. I always thought you had to be retired before you started caring so much about your grass--not true.

Also, I'm really impressed by how heavy the cap to this growler is. Ha! I thought it was deserving of a photo all on its own. I'm terrible with estimating, but this thing's gotta weight a good full pound or so.

Other great ideas for Father's Day:

The Handpresso!

Mule Mugs

Stainless, Stemless wine glasses

And space pens are always cool because who doesn't find themselves needing to write upside down or through whipped cream on the regular?

Carter turned 4 on the 21st! We celebrated by taking him to the aquarium in Boston. It was appropriate because lately he's been all about chatting about our wedding and asking 1,000 questions about it. That was where we had our reception and our anniversary was the next day on the 22nd (our sixth!).

The excitement of the aquarium was short-lived (Carter asked to go home like an hour into it). Such is life with a 4 year old. Their ideas are so much better than yours. But so far I love 4. Just like I've loved every age. Although 3 and 4 have been my absolute favorite. The best part so far of being a parent, for me, is the inquisitive, hilarious conversations. The boy makes me laugh hysterically at least three times a day, and he's always surprising me with what he knows and the depth of his questions. Every night Tom and I spend at least 10-15 minutes just talking about all the funny things Carter said that day.

After the aquarium we went Legal's for lunch since it's right across the street and then we ventured to Quincy Market to grab some cupcakes for Carter's birthday. He chose Oreo ones from Carol Ann's Bake Shop. They were good!

On our anniversary we got to spend a bunch of time together while my parents had Carter. We went out to eat and since we are so adventurous we even spent some time at Home Depot and Barnes & Noble, where I picked up this new David Sedaris book. The nights I read this book before falling asleep, I wake up in a better mood the next day. This is true for me with both David Sedaris and Seinfeld. I've probably said this north of 70 times, but it can't be reinforced enough. If neither of these two pedestals of hilarity are in your life, I don't know how you go on.

Speaking of things that entertain me. Have you seen Grace and Frankie on Netflix yet? It was new for May and I binge watched the whole season. That's the only way I watch anything. I don't typically have time for lots of extra TV during my regular schedule, so on slow days I just pack in as much as I can. ; )

Another thing I'm excited about on Netflix is season 3 of OITNB. It will be here on June 12th! Ah, don't all scream at once. It's another binge-watcher. I just read an article about the phenomenon of binge-watching. It was interesting, but I didn't read enough of it (or read it deeply enough) to really relay anything of use to you. Sorry about that. Such is internet skimming.

On that note, I shall leave you with this:

Right now I'm assuming you use Netflix profiles. You know, a different little avatar for each person in your family? Well have you ever accidentally used your own profile for your kids' shows and then the only recommendations you get are Care Bears and Caillou? And does it make you want to throw things?

So good news. Say you accidentally play Octonauts on your profile instead of Little Jimmy's and begin to curse the day you were born. Well now (and for a while now, but maybe you're just figuring this out like me), you can log into your Netflix account through a browser and go to your profile's history and delete individual shows from said history. So next time Doc or Grumpy bear lands on your "shows recommended for you" get into that history and delete those kids' shows so you have something left that is actually yours.

This month we have some new favorites on Netflix.

Carter watched Playmobil's SUPER4 for the first time. We had a little viewing party and he wanted to dress up like Ruby the Pirate; so we made that happen (with our own interpretation). He was basically a middle-aged man version of Ruby the Pirate.

My favorite right now is hands down Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. I don't know why I didn't watch this sooner! I watched all 13 episodes in 3 days. (Don't judge, I didn't sit around on the couch all day for three days.) Every time I did the dishes--which surprisingly is a lot of times in two days with a 3 person family--I threw it on. Put it on while I picked up around the house, while I put makeup on; you get the idea. I also definitely stayed up too late watching it too. Episode 5 is where things start to get particularly hilarious.

Tom's been watching Daredevil. He thinks it's awesome. I have no further comment because I haven't watched it with him. I'm a total feminist (females are strong has hell....hahaha) and I hate the idea of "boy" and "girl" things, but in my mind there are totally boy and girl shows. And Daredevil falls under the former category for me, so no thanks.

What have you been watching?

This post is part of a year-long partnership with the Netflix #StreamTeam.

Yesterday was one of those days where Carter was great all day and then suddenly at around 2 he just hit a wall and could no longer function. Tired, moody, telling me his stomach hurt. He just crashed. Then he started with the fever. I was so thrown off because these things always happen in the middle of the night, don't they?!

He actually fell asleep in the car yesterday, and I can't remember the last time that happened so I knew he definitely wasn't himself.

We put him to bed early last night and this morning I had one of those glorious, slow mornings with him. You know where you don't go anywhere or accomplish anything right away? I lounged with him in the recliner so he could get a little more rest (he always wakes up early when Tom goes to work, sick or not). We did absolutely nothing until 11am and it was so good for him (and me too!)

Now Tom and I are feeling this little bug too (the first sign I know I'm not feeling well is when I have to force myself to drink one cup of coffee rather than savoring cup after cup.)

So anyway, we've been sick of all our usual movies (no pun intended) so we searched through Netflix and happened upon The Emperor's New Groove. I remember seeing that in the theatre years ago. We also watched The Brave Little Toaster, which brought me back to my play room circa 1992.

Another throwback show on Netflix that we are just starting to get into (but it's not really a throwback since it's a new series) is Inspector Gadget. I LIVED for this show as a kid. The theme song is in my head right now
Go, Gadget, Go!
da-da-da-da-da
Inspector Gadget...

I also frequently ask Tom to use his "go-go gadget arms" to reach me anything in the back seat when we're in the car. His arms go for days and he can reach anything, anywhere in the entire car and it's hilarious. Sometimes I ask for things just to see if he can reach it because it's so amusing.

Anyway, around 11, Carter got a burst of energy and for the first time ever asked me to do his hair. I have begged him in the past only to get shot down over and over. Today he wanted it "Like Hobby Pig from Hobby Kids" and then he pulled up the YouTube video and showed me exactly what he meant. Oh those YouTube channels. They're a double edged sword, I tell you.

So I gave him a little swoop and had a silly photo shoot. It was a good day.
This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of MetLife as part of the #DreamForMyChild conversation.

So have you guys seen this video on YouTube yet? It makes you feel all kinds of sad and happy at the same time, doesn't it? (Just like A Fault in Our Stars. Watch that movie the very second you are done reading this blog post, even if you thought the previews made it look predictable. Totally worth your time. One of the best movie's I've seen in a while).

And the little girl in the below video is just the sweetest, which never hurts.

When you watch this, doesn't it make you think about how your kids see you? Don't they surprise you all the time with how perceptive they are? Today was not an easy day. I had a "to-do" list that was longer than Pinocchio's nose and had to be three places at once. After preschool, when Carter noticed I was busy and not devoting 100% of my attention on him, he started saying things like "this is a stinky day." He loves to pull that phrase out. It cuts me deep! He knows exactly what to say to bring on the guilt.

But then he realized I really was having a "stinky day" and he became SO SWEET. He said "Mommy, I know how to make this hard day better. Come here. Get closer." So I walked over to him and he said "you need a kiss and a hug." Then he proudly announced, "See? I made the hard day better!!" And that he did. In that moment I felt like 1,000 pounds was lifted from my shoulders. No matter how frustrating my day had been, it all ended with a little help from a 3 year old. (It also helped when my mom sent me a text to let me know she had my laptop that I had lost in my absent-mindedness.)

So back to what I was saying about the video. This father has dreams for his child. To go to a good school, to have an actual childhood without worrying about things like food, money, and necessities.

You know how everyone is always hypothesizing about what job their children will do when they're older based on their personality (myself included)? It can be fun to think about. But at the end of the day I honestly have to say I don't have much of an opinion on what Carter decides to do in the future. What I want is for him is to have the opportunity to work hard at something he's passionate about. And I want it to give him contentment. Contentment in a peaceful, real happiness way. I kind of hope he becomes a minimalist mountain man with a tiny house and a lake for a backyard. That screams contentment to me. Not trying to rush after the newest car, a bigger house, nicer things, on an endless hamster wheel.

Every time I read this quote I just have to laugh at the ridiculousness that life is sometimes.

Now, doesn't it all seem so pointless? (The answer to that is yes, yes it does).

The one thing in this quote that I totally have under control now is the clothes thing. And that was reinforced today when I had to have a meeting outside of the house, in the real world. This morning, as I was looking through drawers and shelves and hangers, I realized what working from home has given me. A lot of yoga pants, zip-up sweatshirts and v-neck t-shirts. [insert cry-laughing emoji here]

But for real. Sometimes you just have to stop and enjoy what you have and make life an experience and not a series of goals to get you to the next best thing.

So if I had to choose just one dream for Carter, I think it would be that he read this quote a few times (once he can read) and really take time to think about what's going to make him truly happy.

So Carter is still at it with his difficult questions. New today was "why do we have bones in our hands?" For that question I was able to whip up an answer, but for some questions he throws out--totally unprepared.

He's also throwing me off with new words he's using. This stage of 3, almost 4 is so crazy. He's changing right before my very eyes and I don't even know what to do about it. It's like he's 3 going on 30.

The other day we were playing a Paw Patrol board game. You have to have a little cardboard cutout of each of six different pup packs to win. You get the packs by landing on them with the spinner. So my sister spins and gets the same pup pack twice.

Carter: "It's okay, Auntie. Sometimes you get a duplicate." Duplicate?! What?

Me: "Carter, that was a really good word to use."

Carter: "How do I know these things?"

This dress was sent to me from eShakti. I chose it because I LOVE the top! I also thought it was fun that it was short sleeved. And yes, I'm standing outside with short sleeves and snow on the ground. I've had a hard time taking photos of this dress because even though we're inching toward spring, there are still limited hours of good daylight! So anyway, bare arms in about 20 degrees happened. And it wasn't that fun.

P.S. The belt is separate and I borrowed it from my sister. That's what sisters are for, aren't they?

If you're in need of anything from a sun dress to a bridesmaid dress, grab 10% off with code NTYRVERGEB. Code is good until 4/3/15.
Since I had to get all dressed up today, I thought a good makeup sesh was in order. It's always fun to take the time to put more than a little bronzer and mascara on (my daily routine).

This post is part of a year-long partnership with the Netflix #StreamTeam.

Call it a snack, call it a dessert--either way it's delicious. So I'm not complaining or anything, but it's been frigid here lately. This morning I walked outside to start the car in just a zip-up sweatshirt and my first thought was hey it's not too cold today! Then I read the thermostat in the car--2 degrees. Two! And I thought it felt nice out? That's a sad, sad story.

So anyway--we've been working on ways to have fun inside since the last time we played outside we almost got frostbite. Funny story! I really did get frostbite once. Most disgusting thing in the world. I'll save that story for a post without pictures of food. What can I say, I'm a good person.

To keep mundane-ness of days inside at bay we made a fun snack to eat while we snuggled up to our Netflix for the day. All you'll need to do the same is a banana, some peanut butter and candy coated sunflower seeds. You could use regular ones too, if you're not as fun as we are. (Just let yourself eat the chemical dye this one time. You can't win 'em all and it's totally worth it).

The first time Carter tried these sunflower seeds he deemed them "the worst candy ever," but today I caught him sneaking handfuls when he thought I wasn't looking so I'd say that was "the worst <strike>lie </strike>story ever."

So let's catch up on our monthly Netflix, shall we?

Carter's watching: Care Bears

Amy's watching: Friends (duh), Inside the Hunt for the Boston Bombers, Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead 2

Tom's watching: Parks and Recreation

Friends needs to explanation other than the fact that I like to quiz myself to see if I remember what's going to happen in the next episode. I know I stored all that extremely important information in the back of my brain somewhere with the lyrics to "Smelly Cat" and

"I made a man with eyes of coal

And his smile was so bewitchin'

How was I supposed to know

That my mom..."

Funny story. So I've said a million times how I've had the same best friends since preschool. That song used to be our favorite to sing in the car so our moms made us change the lyrics from "my mom was dead in the kitchen" to "my mom was cooking in the kitchen." The two statements were basically equivalent.

Therefore the no-cook "recipe" in this post is completely appropriate. It's delicious and fail-proof.

So our sweet puppy Gemma doesn't make it on the blog quite as often as she should. She's pretty shy, she likes to prance in the backyard (especially over snow in her houndstooth and faux fur sweater/jacket) and she's not that into crunchy treats. She has many moods and for those many moods we have many names:

Gem

Gemma Posey

Gemma Pose

Gemma Poe

Gem Pose

Gem Poe

Posey

Pose

Poe

We go through about all of these combinations in a single day. She knows them all well. I think she prefers Posey. She gets really googly-eyed when you call her that.

She likes to tease other dogs

And she likes to sit on laps.

Sorry for my not-so-great quality iPhone pictures. I've been the worst about charging my camera. Blast those fast-dying batteries!

Who are my pet people out there? Here's my monthly rundown of what's new and what we're watching on Netflix.

New: Puss in Boots If you're a cat person, this might just be your thing.

What I'm watching: The Duchess
What Tom's watching: who knows
What Carter's watching: all the Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood. I really like this show. The little songs in every episode have been so helpful. Carter's favorites are: you've gotta try new food 'cause it might taste gooOOOOoood. And When you're feeling frustrated. Take-a-step-back -- and ask for help. Like what I did there? If you're familiar with the show then you get it.
