What We Watch: Netflix and Veggie Tales Live!

This post is part of a year-long partnership with the Netflix #StreamTeam. I received a one year Netflix streaming subscription and an iPad mini for participating. I've been a paying customer of Netflix for 8 years--I'd be lost without her.  Thanks for reading!

So I talked about it a lot in the past, but we haven’t been cable people for a while. Technically, we still have basic cable, but other than a random Kelly & Michael when I have the time (twice a year?) it’s obsolete in this house.
Netflix is our go-to and has been for years…and since it’s something I legitimately use every day or at least multiple times a week, I’ve decided to partner up with Netflix to be a part of the Stream Team because it felt natural and it’s something I like talking about anyway (did you see my last post?).
So onto what we watch. I am a documentary-ivore. I devour them. All types, but mostly health related ones. Here's a little list of what we're watching currently. If you're in need of a "mental health day" (where you don't get out of sweatpants and just sit around binge watching shows and movies all day--let this be your guide).
Amy's Favorites
Documentaries: (from the past year): Blackfish, Bridegroom, Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead, and that weird alien conspiracy one for it’s ridiculous/awesomeness. Also GMO OMG (this made me cry 3 times--emotional much?), TINY (I want one!!!!) and Forks Over Knives/Engine 2 Kitchen Rescue (basically I like any health documentary with Dr. Fuhrman in it. He's my celebrity crush. haha!)
Drama: Obviously OITNB, Scandal, Call the Midwife (ah! Even with no medical interest whatsoever you will still love this show) and Parenthood (addicting and you will relate even if you don't have kids)
Classics: North & South. When I read this novel, I wanted it to be a movie. And then I realized it was five years later and I’m so happy I found it. I watched all four “episodes” in one sitting. If you don’t watch them in one sitting and stay up until 3am, you are nuts.
Comedy: Our Idiot Brother (if you need something stupid and hilarious to watch)

Tom’s current favorites

Dexter, The Blacklist (I love this too)

Carter’s current favorites

Veggie Tales anything, Phineas & Ferb, Jake and the Neverland Pirates.

I find Phineas and Ferb to be hilarious. There has been more than one occasion where Tom and I have watched a couple episodes after Carter has gone to bed. I know, we are so exciting it is mind-boggling.

But back to Veggie Tales; they're starting a Netflix series on Thanksgiving! We are knee-bouncing excited. We took Carter to Veggie Tales Live a couple of weeks ago and it was maybe the most exciting thing to ever happen to him. Veggie Tales to him is like Sesame Street to other preschoolers. He's IN LOVE. I love Veggie Tales too because every little movie is very morals-based and there's always a good lesson to learn (for adults too!)

Here are a couple of photos of our Veggie Tales Live trip. Carter was so involved in the show that he barely moved a muscle. He sat stiff as a board for 2 hours straight. That has never happened before (and very likely will never happen again). We were super lucky and got to sit in the front row (had to splurge for VIP tickets since this was the first time VTL was in New England--at least that we know of!) Worth it. Especially since we got some bubble-maker action too.

Our "M" Alphabet Date

(If you haven't heard of the Alphabet Dating series: A blogger is given a letter and organizes a date with her significant other around that letter. Tom and I had "M.")

Well we had big plans to be all exciting and adventurous with our alphabet date, but then Carter got sick and had a high fever for a few days at the same time we planned our date. We decided to have a Date Night In (as in at home) instead! Home date nights are some of our favorites anyway.

It started off with a dose of Motrin for our favorite boy, bedtime, and then some (banana bread) Muffins that I whipped up (emphasis on the fact that they're from scratch because this is really the only thing I cook for real). I made them into little heart shapes because what's cuter and more date-y than heart-shaped muffins?

Oh, you want the recipe? Well go out and grab yourself one of those cheap-o rubbery heart shaped cupcake trays from Target and you'll be ready to go:

This recipe is from my aunt and it's my all time favorite banana bread. I even wrote about it once before here.

Preheat the oven to 350

What You'll Need:
1 C sugar
1/3 C butter (I used Earth Balance buttery spread to make them dairy free; coconut oil works too!)
2 eggs
6 very ripe bananas (I like to freeze the ones we can't eat right away and save them to make these!)
1/3 C water
1 2/3 C all purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp baking powder

-grease cupcake pan
-mix sugar + butter
-stir in eggs + blend well
-add bananas + water
-stir in remaining ingredients
-pour into pan; bake until toothpick comes out clean
-cool 5 min.

After the muffins, we listened to Music (Mumford & Sons, to be exact) and played Memory. This is maybe the simplest card game of all time, but for some reason I think it's really fun--so does Tom--because he wins all the time (evidence below). P.S. Does anyone else have a husband who wins at everything? Sports, card games, puzzles, word searches; you name it and Tom wins it. Not because he tries to beat me at everything (he wins even when he's trying to let me win). Maybe I'm just terrible at all of these things?

After the rousing game of Memory (I admit, it's not my favorite, but there really aren't that many card games that are exciting with only two people, but we both were in the cards mood), we watched a Mad Men Marathon. We have been wanting to watch it for a while, but we haven't had the chance, so we thought our alphabet date was the perfect excuse to park ourselves in front of the TV for a couple of hours at night instead of doing something productive!

And if you find it at all interesting, I was wearing my new (and favorite) MAC Mascara! A date with the husband is allwwaayyss a good reason to buy new mascara (even when you have 27 others).

Thank you to Kaitlyn and Sharlee for organizing this fun Alphabet Dating series!

A Salon Visit

I wanted to mention quickly, for those of you who are local to the Boston area, that I had a chance to visit the Anthony David Salon in Burlington for a wash/cut/blow dry and it was awesome! I saw Krysten and she was extremely friendly and I felt really comfortable. I loved my hair cut. They also use completely natural products, and if you know me at all, you know this makes me SO happy!

I almost never buy salon products because I know how chemical-laden the ingredients are, but now I don't have to worry. One line that they use is called Eufora and oohhmygosh. Smells ah-mahzing (and you know how weird I am about scented anything. If it isn't absolutely awesome then don't come within a 20 mile radius). Also worth mentioning, Eufora is 70% pharmaceutical grade aloe. Say what? I'm officially in love. See you guys never because I'm going to start living in this salon.

Friday's Letters: Glee, Chris Colfer, Trends

checking out drains (naturally) and running to the park

Dear Glee,
I'm going to be honest and tell you that I had no idea how awesome you were, nor did I care to find out. Well, one fateful day when I needed some background noise, I "discovered" you on Netflix. I'm obsessed.

Dear Glee Writers,
Klaine needs to get back together! Enough of this nonsense. Readers--do you watch Glee? HOW OBSESSED are you with Kurt + Blaine???? I've also become real life obsessed with Chris Colfer now and I've been (not so subtly) hinting that I want The Land of Stories for my birthday in a few weeks!

{image source}
P.S. Want to be besties?
Dear (almost born) Nephew,
It would be pretty great if you came on Sunday. Irish named babies born on St. Patrick's Day are pretty awesome. I'm sure your mom would be fine with it too, seeing as your due date is tomorrow. I'm really excited to hold you, so much so that "really excited" doesn't really do the feeling justice.

Dear Clear Trend,
No. Just no. I'm feeling a little bit all right with the clear accessories (like an umbrella or a bracelet), but a clear bag? Nobody wants to see tampons all awry in a purse, sorry. Let's not get started on the shoes. AGAIN? I totally admit to wearing clear heeled (LIGHT UP) shoes in seventh grade. But it was SEVENTH GRADE (and it was horrible then). It's even more horrible now. Just say no! (although if you happen to be a fan--because let's face it, you're allowed to disagree with me), I do like the post on it at Life Unsweetened.

And now onto a little "business"

Hot Date + eHarmony

What did we do this weekend? Well, Tom and I had a hot date to go see Twilight. Yup, dorks over here. And you know what? I LOVED it. The thing about movies like Twilight are you have to go in knowing what to expect, namely, some lame jokes, tons of corny-ness and a super cute story twisted with a bunch of stressful scenes. If you know that's what you're in for, you're not going to be disappointed. And disappointed I was not. Don't worry, no spoilers here, but something else more interesting happened while we were at the movie.

Source
So we're sitting there, minding our own business during the previews, waiting for the movie to start. The token loud laugher is sitting only five seats to our right (bummer) and the annoying family has just waltzed in to our left and bee-lined it for the front row (woot! get outta here!)

When suddenly, a young chap who we will call "Timmy" (wearing skinny jeans, but he was so skinny they looked baggy, sporting hipster glasses without knowing they're hipster, and proudly wearing a leather jacket, somehow without looking any tougher, melting girls' hearts in the same way that a puppy does.)  walks in. After he makes a few laps around the theater, he catches Tom's (yes, Tom's) attention. Tom leans over and whispers "I think he's looking for someone"

Timmy continues to stare awkwardly down rows, looks at his phone, at the rows, at his phone, takes another lap, sits down for a second, gets back up, takes off his jacket, puts it back on. I lean over to Tom and say,

"I bet he's waiting for someone he met on an online dating site."

Now, before you "We met on eharmony!" people get all offended on me, this is not meant to be a negative thing. Just an observation due to my extreme deductive reasoning skills.

Tom says "You think so?"

And I'm all "yeah, definitely, he looks nervous and he doesn't know who he's looking for. If he knew the girl (we just assumed it was a girl he was looking for, we really had no idea) he would've found her by now and he wouldn't seem so worried." (Timmy was about seven laps in by this point).

At this exact moment he swoops into the row four ahead of us and shyly asks the girl if her name is Shelby. She was very nice to him and apologized that she was not in fact Shelby. I got a little nervous at that point because she had two friends with her and they all seemed to be late teens/early 20s. Females of this age can be ruthless, but actually, they were all very sweet and I was so relieved. This didn't relieve Tom, he won't admit it now, but I think he was a little choked up that this wasn't Shelby. By this point Tom was totally rooting for .Timmy

He continued to check his phone nervously. It was getting dangerously close to the start of the movie, the lights were dimming and we started to freak out. Tom was agitated, "I can't relax and watch this movie until I know this kid is going to be okay."

And I was like "You said it brother, I'm all stressed out that this Shelby girl's standing him up."

Timmy shyly made his way to the back of the theater and disappeared out the back doors. Now we were really beside ourselves. "Oh crap, now we definitely can't watch the movie."

We sat there in silence for a moment, pondering Timmy's fate, when Tom couldn't take it anymore. "I'm going to go help him."

Guys, this was cute. Real cute. I got all giddy over Tom (not that I ever stopped). Tom is the type of person, while careful with money, would rather buy out the whole movie theater  just so that he wouldn't have to deal with token loud laugher and the annoying family, and here he was reaching out to his fellow patrons at the movies.

Tom got out of his seat, went out the back doors, and quickly came back in smiling..."He found her!!"

"Did you talk to him?"

"No! I walked out and saw them meet!"

We were pretty stoked for Timmy.

We proceeded to eye them during the rest of the previews while Timmy sat with his right leg curled underneath his left and swung the left like an eight year old on a swing set.  To further corroborate my blind date meetup theory, Shelby had brought a friend with her. You now  the friend who makes sure the guy you're meeting isn't an ax murderer or something.

It was really fun to witness a blind date like that, even if the two datees had no idea how much we felt like a part of their night. To be honest, they got boring after a while, but the whole first fifteen minutes of their date were super interesting. It was like real reality television.

Do you people-watch on dates? Or are Tom and I the only creepers out there??

Makeup Consultation Success!!

So I had my makeup consultation today. It went AWESOME. I now have a real, almost set in stone plan for the classes I"m going to take and when I can start booking clients! (scream, scream, scream, yell like a little girl). It was beyond exciting.

The makeup artist himself was all sorts of amazing. He is SO nice, told me I did a good job on my own makeup (instant best friends--this is probably what he was going for seeing as he wants me to pay him the dough--it worked). And I got to tour the huge/awesome facility. There is a separate eyebrow and eyelash room. Swoon. I was basically completely in my element and having so much fun just looking around at all the photography studios, etc. We talked about the celebs he has done (Sarah Jessica Parker, and a bazillion others) and I kind of got a little giddy. I saw his autographs and his super awesome vintage makeup collection. SO, SO cool.

I really don't have words for anything else because I'm consumed with makeup right now, and I don't want to bore you within in inch of your life. All I want to do is go figure out how I get discounts at every makeup store once I'm an official makeup artist. So that's what I plan to do right now ; ) You know me, always contemplating my next shopping move.

So I'll  leave you with a picture of my two-tone hair that I'm loving that I was supposed to post like a month or so ago (sorry about that). And some photos of Carter at Halloween. He was an 80s rocker (fake earring and all). My sister and I were groupies, Tom was security. Carter has a mullet that I refuse to cut so we had to take advantage, you know?

(oh and excuse my random hair loop in the Halloween photo)

EXCITING NEWS!!!!

And, no, I'm not expecting #2 (I know that's what you were thinking, what with this blog name having the word "baby" in it and all).

I JUST BOOKED MY CONSULTATION FOR MAKEUP TRAINING!

Oh yes. It's next Saturday,  and I'm slightly  freaking out. I'm going to have to bring some wine with me and pound a bit right before the appointment so as not to seem like a complete lunatic. I think I have not been this excited since 1. my wedding day and 2. the moment I realized I was in real, actual labor.

Do you know what this means? 1. I start my classes soon--like classes, of doing makeup, and talking about makeup, and doing real things with makeup and...oh my gosh... and 2. Being a real, live, certified, makeup artist. Hoolly ccaarrraaapp. 3. Being this excited causes me to create numbered lists.

OK, enough freaking out. Here are some gorg photos so you can get an idea of what is flashing through my mind right now. Thank Pinterest for these beauts.

Now excuse me while I go squeal like a 16-year-old who just got her license.

Sentimental

So I'm writing the real "how we met." If you read this one and were confused, don't worry, you'll get the for reals story, OK? I think I'll even give you a wedding sneak peak and some preggers photos just for fun. You know, since this little blog didn't exist then, it might be fun to still have all those stories on here. Sound good?

So writing the real stories made me go back and look at pictures from last year. And I found pictures of last fall. Carter has changed so freaking much. Usually, I am not all sappy around these parts, but I just can't help it right now.

How We Met

Now this is the story all about how my life got flip-turned upside down and I'd like to take a minute, just sit right there, I'll tell you how I became the wife of a guy named Thom-as.

This one time at band camp Tom and Amy were about to swap phone numbers when it was time to leave. They tried desperately to shout their numbers to one another before boarding their respective buses, but they had a problem. They had just shared a bag of pretzels and it was getting harder and harder to yell.

"These pretzels are making me thirsty!" Tom yelled, as the counselor pulled him up to the first stair of the vehicle.

"Baby, baby, baby, nooooo!" Amy shrieked back as she saw the doors close over Tom's tear-streaked face. "I thought you'd always be mine!"

In the criminal justice system premature separations from summer camp are considered especially heinous. Just 24 hours previous Amy had laid eyes on Tom for the first time. It was minutes before the Sadie Hawkins dance. Tom was wearing khaki pants. She had a weakness for khaki pants, especially the pleated ones.

He was also in the middle of a boxing match (yes, in his khaki pants). While she looked on in a dream-like state, she almost got caught in the crossfire. Tom was boxing another camper, Kramer, in the ring--the one ring to rule them all.

His six-fingered fist was pulled back like an arrow and he was about to release it as he shouted at Kramer, "My name is Tom Inigo Montoya, you scratched my CD, prepare to die!"

Amy ducked, Kramer squealed, Tom moved swiftly; he was about to send Kramer into next week when Amy couldn't bear it anymore. "Stop!" Amy shouted, "I volunteer as tribute!" Amy climbed into the ring and shook as she stared into Tom's huuunnngryyy eyes.

Tom's fists dropped to his side, he stood there for a minute, silent, as the invitation to the dance rolled off her tongue, "Hello. I'm just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her."

"You had me at hello," Tom said as he literally swept Amy off her feet. He set her down outside of the boxing ring, "Would you be my girlfriend? I'd treat you good. You know I hear your friends when they say you should."

Amy accepted, held his hand and said "Your hands are cold."

Tom replied, "Now we're the same temperature."

Business Plan Boot Camp: SUCCESS

So, I'm sitting here, drinking my pumpkin coffee from Dunkin Donuts (which, if I'm being honest, really just tastes like pumpkin flavored milk--which is why I'd rather be drinking Starbucks right now, but I digress). But the point is, I'm happy.

I'm happy because we have the best friends in the world. You know those kinds of friends where you don't worry about vacuuming before they come over? And maybe you don't even pick up the kids' toys in the living room, and you just wear yoga pants and a sweatshirt because you know they love you just as much even when you look terrible? Those are the best kinds of friends.

They're also the kind of friends where you can get together on a Saturday night to do work. Yup, you know, like work left over from the week, or studying for finance exams (not me, don't worry), or working on homework for a Master's degree (not me either), or COMING UP WITH YOUR MAKEUP ARTISTRY/HAIR DESIGN BUSINESS NAME, DOMAIN & SLOGAN!?!?!? Because that's what we did last night, I know, we're the epitome of cool. I think we may be the definition of boring married couples, but we don't care. It's worth it.

So yeah, remember that little dream job I told you about back when? Well it was officially born yesterday, except for the fact that it's not our job yet, but it's officially in the works and that's what counts! I guess we took our Business Plan Boot Camp class a little seriously, wouldn't you say? It's also a pretty darn good thing we have CPA/finance husbands because we'd suck at the whole starting a business thing without them. I mean we're great at the coming up with names/uniforms part (we've decided on pink aprons---I KNOW), but we're kind of terrible at the money thing, which is a little bit essential to a business, but whatever.

P.S. Do you know what it's like to sit in a room of "professionals" while they talk about all these Shark Tank-esque ideas and then have them ask you what your business is and you have to say hair and makeup? Kind of intimidating guys, just a tad. But whatever, it was great.

WHERE ARE ALL THE PICTURES of this thrilling Saturday evening, you ask? Well actually, I took them--you know those studious nose-in-the-book shots? They were there. And then just like that they got deleted---because i haven't quite mastered that insta collage app. I'm kind of terrible at it. And no one was really feeling re-takes so I left them alone (you're welcome).

I'll just leave you with this, instead...

His first cider donut. Mmmmmm....

Too Early for Halloween? + updates

Yo, sup, readers? OK, I won't talk like that, promise.

I'm getting super excited for Halloween!! And it's not just because we need to try to top our costumes from last year. (PS This post was from back when I didn't tell anyone about my blog and it was just my little secret. We had some good secret times back then, bloggy).

Here are some photos from last year, if you're not feeling the whole clicking the link thing.

Just in case you're a bit flighty today--we were a lifeguard, a shark and a shark attack victim. The best costumes come together at the last minute. We made these about 15 minutes before these photos were taken. I used a cut up disposable diaper to make my arm look half eaten. Those things come in handy for more than just catching poop, I tell you.

Speaking of Halloween, my sweet affiliate friends over at Paper Coterie  have some pretty great Halloween stuff--tags, cards, posters. I'm getting these little tags to put on small bags of candy for our neighbors' kids.

So, this image quality is terrible, but you get the idea. I'm putting a little poem on the back called "Spooks"

On to other updates...today we found out (through a scratch test) that Carter's officially allergic to sesame. I had mixed feelings. I'm sad that he has a food allergy (although we knew he did), but I'm happy to have an actual answer.

Get pretty excited because tomorrow (or Friday) you're going to see some adorable little things I picked up while thrifting (do you see how good of a blogger I am? Thrifting?!) I'm trying guys, I'm really trying.

DIY: Make Your Own Salt Scrub

Hey Lovelies.

So today I thought I'd share a quick little DIY that I did last week. I wanted to make a gift for my mom's birthday (in addition to her "real" gift, which cannot be named because she didn't get it yet!)

First of all, I have to give credit to my sister-in-law, Melissa, because she made her own first and I stole her idea. She told me the recipe she used, but I forgot (as usual when anyone tells me a recipe for anything) so I made this one up.

What you'll need:

1. oil of some kind. I used canola because it was cheap and easy to find in the store (gotta be quick when you're out with a toddler who'd rather run wild than sit in a cart)
2. coarse salt
3. a cute jar

These are the 3 basic ingredients you'll need for the scrub I added a bit more to make it more fun:

1. coconut oil (you can't go wrong with adding some of this. it feels SO good on your hands and gives the scrub a light coconut scent. the more coconut oil you add, the more solid the scrub will become at room temperature. this could be a good or a bad thing depending on what you want)
2. sea salt (I added a bit of this because it was coarser than the kosher salt. I like to mix things up)
3. food coloring (my mom's favorite color is purple so I wanted to make it purple, duh)
4. fragrance (I used some Lavanila Laboratories pure vanilla perfume to give the scrub a vanilla coconut scent). I had a bunch of testers free from one of my {million} Sephora purchases so I was fine with sparing one.

The Deets:

Mix the oil and the salt in a large bowl. Make sure that the mixture is thick (but not too thick that there's hardly any oil). If you're going to add coconut oil, you'll probably want to heat a bit in the microwave first so that you can add it when it is liquid and make sure it gets mixed in with the rest of the scrub.

Add the food coloring before putting the mixture in a jar. You want to mix it well and give it time to sit. At first it will look like only the salt is getting color, but eventually the whole mixture will take on the color of the food coloring. I'd also do this with only about half the salt/oil you're going to use so that you can lighten it up if you add too much. 4-6 drops should be enough for a 16oz jar.

Add the mixture to the jar and make it pretty. That's it!

weekend + {gasp} a recipe

Hey guys. Long time no see.

This is you seeing me. Or me seeing you. What??

In the past week my grandma turned 80

We had a super fun family reunion weekend where Carter went swimming again

and I made this delicious dessert for a bridal shower.

\
Let me just say these were a lot prettier before the whipped cream melted, but just pretend for me, okay?  The one on the left is a mini strawberry shortcake and the one on the right is a chocolate pudding/oreo (technically Joe Joe's from Trader Joe's, duh) combo.

Do you want the recipe for these bad boys? Good.

Here's what you'll need:

+2oz shot glasses (if you're super classy you'll get real ones, I just got the plastic ones from iParty)
+mini classy spoons (they aren't really called this, again from iParty)

the recipe for the strawberry shortcake that I made was:

+strawberries (go figure)
+sugar
+shortcake (if you're awesome you'll make your own).

I bought the pre-made shortcake biscuits from...YOU GUESSED IT (Trader Joe's) and crumbled them. I dusted the strawberries with some sugar, mixed them up and let them sit in the refrigerator over night. As you can see, I'm not fussy when it comes to recipes. Eyeball it and it comes out better (and faster) than measuring. Promise.

But guys, the chocolate one is pretty complicated so if you're a novice, just skip this one. Ready? Here goes nothing...

+chocolate pudding (any kind)
+oreos/if-you're-like-me-you'll-go-the-natural-route-instead (Joe Joe's, Nature's Path, whatevs)\

1. crumble the oreos/Joe Joe's
2. layer chocolate pudding and crushed cookies

Oh my. That was a mouthful. Hope you can pull it off!

Don't forget to top them with whipped cream. It's what makes them pretty.

Until next time...

on being a bridesmaid + dream job

the wedding was amazing. don't believe me? proof:

how amazing is that picture? that barn is just the greatest. the wonderful bride asked me to do her makeup. you have no idea how happy that made me. like i could pee, happy. here is a photo of us getting her all beautified:

doing makeup for a bride and bridesmaids is no joke. it was pretty intense, but i think it couldn't have turned out better. luckily kels had my back (she always does) and helped me finish up. so me and kels kind of have this dream to be a makeup/hair duo for weddings. i think we would be awesome. it's a dream job for both of us. slowly, we'll get there. we have a group pinterest board here on looks that we adore.

p.s. how cool was my hair? i can say that because i'm not the one who did it. it's a rope braid and i need to learn how to accomplish it. as soon as me and kels figure it out, there will be a tutorial for all you lovely ladies.
p.p.s. if you live in new england, you should probably have kels + me come work our magic on you. we need a portfolio after all.  it's a good idea, promise.

OK, enough bugging you about our dream.

we had some fun in the limo:

reilly had extra fun:

this is how we got ready:

end result:

and guys...at the reception, i even put something up my nose (i don't like to disappoint). actually, two things: a hand and a lobster claw.

now don't you all just want to invite me to your wedding so i can do the same??

l8er, dawgs.
